Description
Piazza del Campo, or Il Campo, is the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It might be one of the few public squares where in the winter people stretch out in the sun on the warm bricks like they are at the beach! The Palazzo Pubblico (right) and its Torre del Mangia (left) stand on the southern side of the square. The distinct formation of the Piazza del Campo is one of the reasons why UNESCO recognizes the historic center of Siena as a World Heritage Site and as the ideal embodiment of a medieval city. The Torre del Mangia is 102 meters tall. Constructed between 1325 to 1348, it is built of the typical terracotta colored brick and topped with in white travertine. Il Campo is where the famed Palio takes place, a passionate horse race around the 333 m circumference of Il Campo. The track is the grayish cobblestone area directly in front of the Palazzo Pubblico and which runs between the piazza's buildings and the central red-bricked area.
