Description
It’s called Gator Ubiquity. It’s a sculpture on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville FL. The artist, Chris Williams says: “The concept conveys the Florida Gator and its presence in the world.” It is inspired by UF’s classic tagline often seen in the media, “The Gator Nation is Everywhere.” This unique piece was added to the campus in 2015 and arguably is the best gator sculpture on campus! When we first came upon it, we were stopped in our tracks by its uniqueness. Interestingly, the artist writes on his website: “In our fast-paced world, people walk around with eyes glazed over. Coming upon these pieces at airports or stadiums or even on suburban lawns, they are pulled out of their hurried lives; they are literally stopped in their tracks…” The sculpture was commissioned for the campus by Bruce and Laura Gross, both 1984 alumni of UF. The work took five months for Williams to complete. It stands 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, weighs approximately 1,500 pounds, and is entirely bronze. The globe is hollow, inspired by images of globes seen at World’s Fairs. On top of the globe is a gator that is composed of more than a thousand pieces of bronze welded together, an intricate technique that the artist utilizes and is perfect for a gator’s scales.
