Description
During 2021 I completed Honours at Deakin University and my major project was to convene gatherings in small country towns. Those who attended were given some clay and a demonstration of how to make a simple vessel. When people are busy creating something simple such as this, they relax and conversation flows more freely. My aim was to discover the significance of the halls to the community. Transcripts of audio recordings tell stories about the halls, both now, and in the past.
The following is one such story
Murray - Oh yes, the Ragamuffin Band. Nancy Juergens, Nancy used to live right alongside, she worked the telephone exchange, and she was very good on the piano. They were quite a good band. And Jack and Jean Burrows lived where Politinis are there now, they were all, the three of them, made up the Ragamuffin Band.
Linda - Was the piano that’s in the hall now the same one that they would have used?
Murray - I think it is, I’m pretty sure it’s the same piano.
Lyn - That piano down the back, not the one that’s in the back room, that one down there is the original.
Marie - Nancy played the piano or piano accordion
Murray - Jack played the saxophone, nearly used to lift the roof. His wife played the drums. They were quite a good band. The ones that played for the New Year’s Eve Ball, was Elliots’ band from Wangaratta, George and Mary Robustelli from Moyhu, they played piano accordion, they were pretty good music too, in those days.
