Artist's Description

Collective Vessels is a participatory action research project that I undertook during my Honours year at Deakin University in 2021. The aim of the research was to determine the value of community halls to residents of small regional towns. The project involved meeting in the hall with members of the community to make simple pinch pots from clay, whilst sharing stories about their connection to the hall. Using clay to make small vessels created a relaxed atmosphere encouraging conversation. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic I was only able to hold one session, held in the Cheshunt Hall. I visited and photographed several of the halls within the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Oxley Hall was near derelict in the 1980's until several members of the community began a restoration project to bring the hall back to life. Now it is a central hub for the town holding bush markets, being used for meetings and a popular venue for weddings.
